Police say that shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday, June 2, officers responded to a block party in the 11400 block of Stewart Lane in Silver Spring where a 16-year-old was shot during a hit-and-run that marred the neighborly celebration.

A group of people were at the block party when a dark-colored sedan with three or four people inside rolled up to the event and began firing into the crowd, with at least one of the bullets striking the girl, they said.

No one else was injured in the shooting, though three vehicles and an apartment were also struck, according to investigators. More than 30 shell casings were recovered at the scene after being shot from a handgun and high-powered rifle.

The investigation is ongoing.

No information about possible suspects or a motive has been released by the police.
